The sun’s out, the temperature’s climbing, and revision is in full swing. But let’s be honest—it’s hard to concentrate when your brain feels like it’s melting.
Whether your child is preparing for the 11+, ISEB, or GCSEs, staying sharp in this heat means more than just getting through the past papers. It means looking after their brain and body so they can actually absorb what they’re learning.
Here’s why hydration and regular breaks are non-negotiable—especially during a summer heatwave.
The brain is around 75% water, so it’s no surprise that even mild dehydration can affect:
Focus and attention
Memory retention
Mood and motivation
📌 Tip:
Set a timer for every 30–45 minutes and remind your child to take a sip of water—not energy drinks or squash with 17 spoonfuls of sugar. A chilled bottle on the desk can work wonders.
💡 Want to make it fun? Use a colourful reusable water bottle, add frozen berries, or turn it into a mini “drink tracker” challenge during the day.
Slogging through hours of revision might look productive, but without regular breaks, the quality of focus drops fast—especially when it’s hot.
Short, structured breaks:
Help consolidate learning
Prevent burnout
Reduce frustration and fidgeting
📌 Tip:
Use the Pomodoro Technique—25 minutes focused revision, 5-minute break. After 2–3 cycles, take a longer break. It’s great for younger learners too.
🌬️ During breaks, encourage:
Stretching or light movement
Splashing cool water on wrists/face
A few minutes in the shade or by an open window
Leaving the screen behind for a reset
Studies show that high temperatures can impair cognitive performance—meaning your child might feel more tired, irritable, or forgetful than usual.
📌 Tip:
Create a cool revision space:
Use fans or keep curtains/blinds drawn in direct sunlight
Revise in the morning or evening when it’s cooler
Keep snacks light (fruit, yoghurt, nuts) and stay away from heavy meals before a revision session
At TJ Tutors, we talk a lot about technique, timing, and exam strategies. But none of that matters if students aren’t physically and mentally ready to revise.
Encouraging your child to pause, hydrate, and rest is just as important as that comprehension question or reasoning drill. In fact, it helps them perform better in all of it.
Some students (and parents) feel guilty stepping away from the books. But here’s the truth: looking after wellbeing in hot weather is revision strategy.
So yes, keep the timetable.
Yes, work through the practice papers.
But also…
✅ Drink water
✅ Take breaks
✅ Sit in the shade
✅ Breathe
It’s the little things that make a big difference—especially when the thermometer hits 30°C.
